Interclub game – Sunday 26th March 2017

Match report: Interclub game Sunday 26th March 2017

Warm Spring sunshine welcomed twenty-two players to our ground on Sunday, where we played our first outdoor games of the season, after a short Meeting to discuss several necessary items of Club business, and where Pragash announced the League and Jinna Trophy/Coupe de France Squads for season 2017.

Magnificent in our new T/20 kit, the players took to the field, having been divided into two Teams: Pragash’s Penguins vs Tyson’s Tykes!

The Tykes batted first, and it was not long before Tyson (35) and Hussan (25) were feeding on the Penguins bowling. In five overs the Tykes had registered over 50 runs, including the season’s first six of the season. Then the tempo of the innings changed, Tyson departed, Hussan retired, and the wily Penguin’s skipper (guess who) brought on the spinners. New member Satish took two in two balls, and regrouping was the order of the day. David Greaves stayed for the middle overs, and a decent cameo from Dilip with a couple of sixes saw the Tykes push their score up to 140 before the innings ended.

A welcome spectator for this first outing of the season was Annabelle, Comtesse de la Panouse, the Patron of our Club. She was in the process of planting 40 new Magnolia trees in the grounds of the Chateau, ten of which will grace our boundary in years to come. We are already very privileged to play on the most beautiful ground in France, and it will become prettier still when the Magnolias are in bloom.

And so to the innings of the Penguins! Batting was decent form all, but a sterling 33 off 17 balls from Suresh and a quick-fire 20 from Vijay saw them home to victory by 5 wickets.

Unfortunately, we had two injuries. Pranav split the webbing on his right had, and had to be taken to Hospital for treatment, whilst Jithu suffered a nasty sprain on his wrist. We wish them both a speedy recovery, and look forward to seeing them on in the thick of the action soon.

Once the game was over, we all repaired to the Clubhouse to celebrate the return of electricity with a slap up supper, and a few drinks. Everyone brought some food and drinks, and Helen once again supplied her excellent cakes and puddings.

Close between Dilip, Suresh, Satish and Tyson for Man of the Match, but the writer has chosen Satish, on his Club debut, largely due to the fact that he (the writer) had to come in and prevent a Hat Trick.

Champagne Moment – The elder statesman John HARDY’s six off Pragash’s 1st ball of the season.
