vs Goa Veterans C.C. Sunday 23rd July 2017
Fresh from a ten wicket defeat by Standard Athletic C.C., Goa Veterans arrived at Thoiry for the last Match of their UK/France Tour determined to leave Europe with a win.
Unfortunately, due to a fixture clash, Thoriy were forced to field a much weakened team, as the Club was involved in a League Match in Mantes simultaneously. In fact, the C.T.C.C. team may well have been called “Ringers United”; such were the number of guest players in our team.
Despite this, a decent 30 over game commenced, and continued in good spirits, as Goa opened with their two best batsmen, who set about putting on 81 for the first wicket.
A paucity of seam bowling meant that Thoiry opened the bowling with the spin of Money Singh, and Abraham, but it was not until eventual Man of the Match, Ben MacIntyre came on with his slow left arm spin that Thoiry started to take wickets, Ben taking four in all.
Vijay starred behind the stumps, taking three stumpings with aplomb – flattening the stumps every time, much to the chagrin of Dusty Rhodes, umpiring at Thoiry for the second time in as many weeks. It was good to see him back!
Despite the efforts of all the Thoiry team, Goa Veterans made 229 for 7 in their allotted thirty overs, before both teams retired to the Clubhouse for an excellent tea, provided for us by Cathy Collins.
Set this daunting total to chase, Thoiry started well, with Manoj making 24 before falling l.b.w. However, a top order collapse saw Charlie Menage having to rebuild the innings, whilst some lusty hitting from Vijay, Abraham and John saw Thoiry reach a not too embarrassing 117 all out.
Then it was back to the Pavillion, where we all tucked in to a copious curry, provided for us by Arif and transported from Paris by Trevin – thanks guys!
Despite the loss on the pitch, the famed Thoiry C.C. hospitality meant that all had a good day’s cricket, and our visitors went back home contented.
Many thanks to Charlie, George, and the two Toms from British Embassy C.C. and Money and Ben from Standard C.C. for helping out when it mattered, and to Chairman Steve and Cathy for organising the day.
Next C.T.C.C. Tour to Goa, anyone??
